Product formPlate is the principal pressure-vessel form; sheet or coil is reviewed only where the governing specification and manufacturing route permit it
DimensionsStandard mill plates or cut sizes according to grade, thickness, width, length and source availability
Material conditionAs-rolled, normalised, normalised and tempered, quenched and tempered or another permitted condition as required by the exact grade
ToughnessImpact testing at the stated temperature, orientation and acceptance energy when required
Internal qualityUltrasonic examination to the specified method, level and acceptance criteria when ordered
Sour serviceNACE, HIC, hardness and chemistry requirements according to the approved project specification
ProcessingCutting, profiling, edge preparation, marking and related services where technically feasible
TraceabilityHeat-number continuity and material-document control according to the agreed processing and inspection plan
Buyers should also state plate tolerances, flatness, surface condition, weld-repair restrictions, corrosion allowance, forming requirement and theoretical or actual weight basis where these affect fabrication or acceptance.

Before Approving a Plate for Fabrication

Check that the plate marking, heat number, grade, class, thickness and material condition agree with the purchase order and MTC. Review chemical and mechanical results, heat treatment, impact values, supplementary test reports and inspection releases. Any mismatch, unclear marking or unapproved substitution should be resolved before cutting or welding.

Pressure Vessel Applications and Selection Factors

Pressure-vessel steel plates may be specified for:

  • Process vessels, columns and separators
  • Heat exchangers, condensers and evaporators
  • Boiler shells, drums and approved boiler components
  • Reactors and refinery process equipment
  • LPG, gas and pressure-storage vessels
  • Chemical and petrochemical equipment
  • Power-generation pressure systems
  • Fertiliser and industrial process units

An application name does not establish suitability. Selection should consider:

  • Applicable ASME, ASTM, EN, IBR, PED or project code requirements
  • Design and operating pressure
  • Minimum and maximum design temperature
  • Plate thickness and required design strength
  • Impact-toughness and brittle-fracture considerations
  • Corrosion allowance, lining, cladding or alloy selection
  • Sour-service, wet H2S, HIC and hardness requirements
  • Welding procedure, preheat and post-weld heat treatment
  • Forming, machining and fabrication sequence
  • Inspection and nondestructive-examination plan
General structural plates such as ASTM A36 or S275JR should not automatically replace pressure-vessel quality material. Likewise, SA 516 should not automatically replace an elevated-temperature chrome-moly grade or a corrosion-resistant alloy.

  • Domestic delivery and export logistics planning
  • Packing and marking according to the agreed transport and destination requirements
The company portfolio identifies sourcing options associated with SAIL, AMNS, JSPL, Evonith and relevant international manufacturers or stock sources. Mill and brand availability vary by grade and project. A named mill does not by itself represent permanent inventory, authorised distributorship or manufacturer endorsement.
Expedited processing or dispatch may be possible for eligible ready-stock material. Any same-day, 24–72-hour or other delivery statement is valid only when the exact heat/plate, dimensions, quantity, payment, testing, processing, documents and destination have been confirmed. Mill orders, imports, special heat treatment, HIC/UT, third-party inspection and export packing require separate lead-time confirmation.

MTC, Testing, Inspection and Compliance Documentation

Pressure-vessel material procurement typically requires controlled traceability and a defined document package. Requirements must be stated before quotation because they influence material availability, inspection stages, cost and delivery.

Depending on the grade, manufacturer and accepted order scope, documentation may include:

  • Manufacturer material test certificate
  • EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate where applicable
  • EN 10204 Type 3.2 certification or validation when arranged in advance
  • Chemical composition and mechanical-property results
  • Heat-treatment and impact-test records
  • Ultrasonic examination reports
  • HIC test reports, hardness records and NACE-related documentation
  • IBR- or PED-related documentation for eligible requirements
  • Inspection and test plan, release note and third-party inspection records
  • Material marking and traceability records after agreed processing
Third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, Lloyd's Register, DNV or another nominated agency may be arranged when agreed before dispatch. Agency names indicate inspection options, not universal product approvals or endorsements.
IBR, PED, NACE and certificate references apply only to the specific material and order supported by the corresponding documentation. Any company ISO claim should show the current certificate number, issuer, scope and validity before publication.
