Equipment and Material-Selection Challenges

These equipment classes must be separated at the start of material selection. An atmospheric storage tank is designed around contained liquid, corrosion allowance and tank requirements. A pressure vessel retains pressure above atmospheric conditions. A boiler adds fired or heat-recovery duty and steam generation. A reactor can introduce reaction chemistry, hydrogen, catalyst, thermal cycling or hazardous media.

The grade name alone does not establish suitability. The design authority must select and approve the material against the applicable code, temperature, pressure, process medium, fabrication route and project specification. Material supply does not establish compliance for a completed item, welding procedure, design or operating permit.

Applications and Component Considerations

Pressure-vessel plates may be evaluated for vessel shells, heads, columns, separators, knockout drums, heat-exchanger shells and process tanks when the ordered specification supports the component. Thickness, impact temperature, forming and inspection can change the acceptable route.

For boilers, steam drums, waste-heat boilers and HRSG-related equipment, the purchaser should distinguish ordinary pressure-vessel duty from elevated-temperature service. Carbon-steel pressure-vessel plate may suit a defined temperature range, but creep-controlled service can require a specified chrome-moly or molybdenum-bearing route, suitable welding consumables and controlled post-weld heat treatment.

Reactor and process-vessel selection also depends on chemistry. Nickel alloys may be considered for individually assessed corrosive duties; they are not a blanket answer to acids, chlorides, caustics or high-temperature oxidation. Atmospheric tanks need product-specific assessment and should not be treated as pressure vessels solely because they store a process liquid.

Testing, Certification and Project Documentation

Documentation must be requested before quotation. Depending on grade, mill, code and project, the material package may include:

  • EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTC or arranged Type 3.2 certification
  • Heat-number traceability, marking transfer and cut-piece identification
  • Specified impact testing, ultrasonic examination and acceptance criteria
  • PMI for alloy identification, where required
  • HIC testing, hardness limits or supplementary chemistry controls when stated
  • Delivery condition, heat-treatment records, carbon-equivalent controls or PWHT-related requirements where applicable
  • Buyer-nominated third-party inspection and agreed release documentation
ASME, IBR, PED or other code-related material, inspection and certification requirements must be tied to the exact order scope. They must not be inferred from generic wording such as "ASME approved" or "NACE approved."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a boiler, pressure vessel, tank and reactor?
They have different duties and design bases. Tanks are commonly atmospheric storage equipment; pressure vessels contain pressure; boilers add steam-generation or heat-recovery requirements; reactors introduce reaction and process-chemistry considerations.
Which steel is used for pressure vessels?
SA 516 Grade 60 or Grade 70 may be evaluated where the governing code and approved project specification require those grades. Final selection depends on pressure, temperature, thickness, toughness, fabrication and documentation.
Which material route suits higher-temperature boilers or reactors?
For specified elevated-temperature service, a chrome-moly route such as an SA 387 grade or 16Mo3 may be considered. The required metal temperature, creep design, welding and PWHT requirements must be confirmed by the design authority.
Is HIC or NACE testing required for every pressure vessel?
No. HIC testing and sour-service controls are project- and service-specific. The RFQ must state the applicable standard, test method, acceptance criteria and documentation requirement.
Can nickel alloys be supplied for corrosive reactors?
Selected nickel-alloy plates may be evaluated for confirmed process conditions. The actual chemical, concentration, contaminants, temperature, oxygen/aeration, flow and fabrication conditions must be assessed before selection.
What documentation can be requested with the material?
Request the required MTC level, heat traceability, impact testing, UT, PMI, HIC testing, hardness controls, heat-treatment records and third-party inspection before ordering. Availability depends on the confirmed scope.
Can cut or profiled pieces retain traceability?
Where feasible, cutting, profiling and agreed marking-transfer procedures can be arranged. The required identification method, certificate linkage and inspection hold points should be defined in the order.
