Refinery Equipment and Material-Selection Challenges

Oil and gas refineries contain equipment operating under different service conditions. Crude processing, distillation, hydroprocessing, reforming, desulphurisation, heat recovery, storage and utility systems may involve pressure, temperature, cyclic loading, corrosion or hydrogen-related risks.

Typical procurement requirements can include separators, drums, towers, columns, reactors, heat exchangers, furnace components, pressure vessels, tanks, structural supports and fabricated assemblies. One material grade cannot be assumed suitable for every refinery component.

Important selection factors include:

  • Governing design code and equipment specification
  • Design pressure and operating temperature
  • Process medium, H₂S, chlorides, acids, water content and contaminants
  • Hydrogen damage, wet-H₂S or sour-service requirements

The final grade must be selected by the project design authority and confirmed against the governing specification. ASTM A36, S275JR and base SA 516 grades should not be treated as automatic substitutes for each other.

Refinery Applications and Components

Pressure-vessel materials may be considered for approved separators, flash drums, knockout drums, process vessels, heat-exchanger shells, columns and storage or process equipment. High-temperature service may require chrome-moly routes where the design code, operating temperature and PWHT requirements justify them.

Wet-H₂S service needs a more specific review. HIC testing addresses hydrogen-induced cracking resistance under defined testing conditions. SSC, SOHIC, hardness limits and NACE/AMPP requirements are separate matters and must be stated clearly in the material requisition.

Nickel-alloy material may be evaluated for selected corrosive process streams, scrubbers, acid-handling equipment, coolers, evaporators or heat-exchanger components. It must not be described as universally corrosion-proof. Chemical concentration, temperature, aeration, chlorides, impurities, fabrication and cleaning conditions can materially change the correct alloy route.

This page concerns plate, sheet and coil material. It does not automatically establish suitability for pipe, tube, forging, casting, bar, welding consumable or completed-equipment requirements.

Testing, Certification and Project Documentation

Refinery projects may require documentation beyond a standard material certificate. The applicable requirements must be defined before order placement.

  • Heat-number traceability and transfer-of-marking procedure
  • Impact testing at the specified temperature
  • Ultrasonic examination with stated method and acceptance level
  • PMI for alloy verification
  • HIC testing with the stated standard, solution and acceptance values
  • Hardness, chemistry or carbon-equivalent restrictions
  • MR0175/ISO 15156 or MR0103/ISO 17945 review where applicable
  • IBR, PED, project-approved mill or buyer-nominated inspection requirements
Material documentation is not the same as refinery-equipment certification. Certification, inspection and testing apply only when included in the agreed material scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which materials can be supplied for refinery applications?
Material routes may include SA 516 pressure-vessel grades, HIC/NACE pathways, SA 387 chrome-moly grades, 16Mo3, structural steel and selected nickel alloys, subject to the equipment and specification.
Is SA 516 Grade 70 suitable for every refinery vessel?
No. It may be considered for applicable pressure-vessel requirements, but final selection depends on design temperature, pressure, corrosion, sour service, toughness and code requirements.
What is the difference between HIC-tested and NACE material?
HIC testing, SSC resistance and NACE/AMPP requirements address different risks and standards. The exact test method, acceptance criteria and service requirements must be specified.
Which material is used for high-temperature refinery equipment?
Chrome-moly grades such as SA 387 Grade 11, 12, 22 or 91, or 16Mo3, may be evaluated where the approved design specification requires elevated-temperature performance.
Can corrosion-resistant alloy plates be supplied?
Selected nickel-alloy routes may be reviewed for corrosive process conditions. The chemical, concentration, temperature and contaminants must be confirmed first.
Can material be cut or processed?
Cutting, profiling, shearing, slitting, edge preparation and marking may be arranged where feasible and agreed in the order scope.
Which documents should a refinery buyer request?
The project may require MTC, traceability, impact testing, UT, PMI, HIC reports, inspection release or Type 3.2 certification. State each requirement in the RFQ.
