Power Equipment and Operating Challenges

Power and industrial-heating projects can involve boilers, steam drums, boiler shells, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, condensers, feedwater systems, separators, tanks, ducts and structural supports. Material requirements vary between conventional thermal generation, captive power, industrial boilers, cogeneration, heat-recovery equipment and other energy projects.

Pressure alone does not determine the correct grade. Buyers must consider the design code, metal temperature, thickness, long-term creep exposure, thermal cycling, weldability, PWHT, corrosion, erosion, fatigue, water chemistry and inspection requirements. A pressure-vessel plate must not automatically be treated as a creep-controlled elevated-temperature material.

These are material routes to evaluate, not guaranteed selections. The design authority, applicable code and approved project specification decide the final grade, form and test scope.

Power-Generation Applications and Components

SA 516 grades may be evaluated for approved boiler, drum, vessel, separator and heat-exchanger applications where the code and service conditions support their use. Final selection must consider toughness, thickness, forming, welding, heat treatment and certification requirements.

Chrome-moly routes may be considered where elevated-temperature performance is required. SA 387 Grade 11, Grade 12, Grade 22, Grade 91 and EN 16Mo3 have different chemical, mechanical, heat-treatment and service characteristics. They must not be represented as direct equivalents. Grade 91 is a creep-strength-enhanced ferritic route that needs particular control of delivery condition, welding, PWHT and inspection.

Engineering alloys such as 4140, 4130, 4340, EN19, EN24 and 42CrMo4 should be selected only where the component design and product specification require them. Plate, sheet and coil supply does not automatically cover turbine shafts, rotor bars, tubes, pipes, forgings, castings or completed equipment.

Testing, Certification and Project Documentation

Power-project procurement may require documentation beyond a standard MTC. The exact requirement must be included in the RFQ and agreed before ordering.

Material records are not boiler, plant or completed-equipment certification. No grade is automatically compliant with every ASME, IBR, PED or project requirement.

Small, bulk and project enquiries are reviewed subject to availability, MOQ and mill programme. Urgent dispatch can only be discussed after the material, documents, processing, payment and destination are confirmed.

Freight mode, preservation, export documentation and shipment planning depend on the confirmed order scope and destination conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which materials can be supplied for power-sector projects?
Material routes may include SA 516 pressure-vessel steel, SA 387 chrome-moly grades, 16Mo3, structural steel and selected nickel alloys, subject to equipment and project specifications.
Is SA 516 Grade 70 suitable for every boiler component?
No. It may be evaluated for approved pressure-equipment requirements, but final selection depends on code, temperature, thickness, toughness, corrosion and fabrication conditions.
Which grades are considered for elevated-temperature equipment?
SA 387 Grade 11, Grade 12, Grade 22, Grade 91 and 16Mo3 may be evaluated where the approved design requires their properties. They are not direct replacements for one another.
Is Grade 91 automatically suitable for every project?
No. Creep-controlled service, heat treatment, welding, PWHT, inspection and the applicable code must be reviewed before selection.
Can corrosion-resistant alloys be supplied?
Selected nickel-alloy routes may be reviewed for corrosive auxiliary conditions after the medium, temperature and component requirements are confirmed.
Can material be cut or processed?
Cutting, profiling, shearing, slitting, edge preparation and agreed marking may be arranged where feasible and included in the order scope.
Which documents can be arranged?
Applicable material may include an MTC. Impact testing, UT, PMI, Type 3.2 certification or third-party inspection must be specified and agreed before ordering.
